The Spanish Prime Minister described the former US President, who also had lunch with the King in Madrid on Monday, as one of the best Presidents in his country's historyAgreement is said to have been reached after a one hour meeting between the Prime Minister,
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and the former US President,
Bill Clinton, on Monday, for a closer Spanish collaboration with the private foundation set up by the 42nd President of the United States in 2005, the
William J. Clinton Foundation, and in particular, one of the foundation’s main areas of action, the
‘Clinton Global Initiative.’
Spain contributed 1 million dollars to this private foundation via the
Spanish Agency for International Cooperation in September, in funds destined for projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Clinton Global Initiative describes itself on its web page as a ‘non-partisan catalyst for action, bringing together a community of global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.’
Mr Clinton praised Spain at a joint press conference with the Spanish PM as an example of economic growth compatible with the fight against poverty and climate change.
Zapatero, for his part, referred to Clinton as ‘one of the best Presidents in the history of the United States,’ for his commitment and leadership in the face of the ‘essential’ problems facing the planet. The Prime Minister described this new level of cooperation as extraordinarily important, and said it will be beneficial to everyone.
