Property prices in La Manga del Mar Menor are reported to have collapsed following the publishing on November 8 by ecologist group Greenpeace of photos showing how the area could well look because of global warming. The photos show extensive flooding of the area.

Real estate agents in the area, such as María José Hernández, from Casas&Houses, claim that the price per square metre constructed has fallen from 4,000 € to 2,300 € in just a year. ‘Some clients have phoned me up to ask if their homes have been flooded already’, she told 20 minutos.

Some estate agents consider that La Manga has been earmarked unfairly by the ecologists, and if it floods there it will also flood in many other local areas such as Los Nietos or Lo Pagán.
Some residents are even reported to be considering moving to such areas.

It comes as the Ministry for the Environment proposed a new plan to save the lagoon yesterday. The plan is create a 500 metre exclusion zone from the sea, and to stop all new building, and was presented to the Murcia regional government and the local councils of the Mar Menor.
