1564: The Basque conquistador, Miguel López de Legazpi, sets sail from Mexico for the Philippines. He became the first Spanish governor general of the Philippines and founded Manila.

2000: the former Socialist Minister, Ernest Lluch, is murdered by ETA in the car park of his building in Barcelona.

Julio Anguita, Mayor of Córdoba 1979-1986, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) 1988-1998, and General Coordinator of the Izquierda Unida left-wing coalition, 1989-2000, was born on this day in Fuengirola, Málaga province, in 1941.

The actress and model, Inés Sastre, was born in Valladolid in 1973.
