The worst off were local farmers, with an estimated 58 million € damage

The town of Utrera, Seville province, is recovering from the flash flood which hit the town in the early hours of Wednesday, with damage caused to some one thousand homes when the Calzas Anchas stream burst its banks in the heavy rainfall.

Most of the homes affected are in the Coca de la Piñera area of the town, where the Town Hall had set up alternative sleeping arrangements and provisions for food in local schools. The cleanup operation continued throughout Wednesday, and many residents were however able to sleep at home that night.

The Partido Andalucista Mayor of Utrera, Francisco Jiménez, gave a breakdown of the estimated 100 million € damage caused by the torrential downpour: 12 million € to private property, 30 million to public infrastructure, and 58 million € of losses suffered by local farmers.

An urgent council meeting held on Thursday afternoon approved, with the support of all parties represented in the Town Hall, a motion to apply for financial assistance from the Junta de Andalucía, and to ask central government to declare Utrera a catastrophe area.
