The judge ruled the case to be archived, considering that the scientists research had legal backing
The judge in Instruction Court number eight in Granada, has ordered that an official complaint placed by a woman from Santiago de Compostela, Carmen Areoso, against the four researchers in the National Stem Cell Bank in Granada be archived. She had accused the scientists of genetic manipulation, but the magistrate ruled that the scientists activity was covered by the law supporting their research, in Andalucia, Spain, and at a European level.
The woman who made the complaint is a well known anti-abortion campaigner and now has the right to appeal the decision to the Andalucian High Court. Carmen Areoso had claimed that after reading an article in ‘Fertility and Sterility’ magazine, the scientists were guilty of ‘genetic manipulation, abortion, damaging foetus and acting against moral integrity’.
