500 kms of additional lanes are being set up to try and help the traffic flow
The Spanish traffic authority D.G.T. is forecasting more than six million journeys will be taken on Spain’s roads this bank holiday weekend.

The Puente break for the ‘Dia de la Constitución’ on Thursday, and 'Dia de la Inmaculada Concepción' on Saturday, will also see the installatoin of 500 kilometres of additional lanes in an attempt to improve the traffic flow.

There is concern this year that adverse weather conditions, and particularly thick mist in places inland and also snow in some areas could affect travellers. Last year saw 41 people lose their lives over this weekend.
The D.G.T. is advising all travellers to check conditions before setting out.

Meanwhile it has been revealed that 154 drivers have been arrested in the first two days of the new Penal Code being applied on Spain’s roads. 151 of them were arrested for having more than 0.60 milligrams of alcohol in their blood, and only three were stopped for excessive speeding. The new penal code can hand down prison sentences of as much as five years prison and fines of upto 288,000 € for the most serious traffic offences.
