Missing Granada fraudster arrested in Dominican Republic

He fled Spain in 2004 with 25 million € of his investors' money
Antonio Herrero, the man known as the ‘jamonero de Trevélez,’ who fled this Alpujarra village in 2004 with 25 million € of his neighbours’ money, has been arrested by Interpol in the Dominican Republic. He is wanted for concealment of assets, fraud, tax crimes and misappropriation, and it’s understood he was brought back to Spain on Thursday.

The money he is accused of defrauding came from more than 300 people who invested in his jamón serrano company, Jamones Fernando, with the promise that they would see huge profits in a record time. He disappeared in October 2004 – according to a Granada province newspaper to Panama - and neither he or the money were seen again. Indeed six of the investors told the court which was hearing their suit against him that they paid their investment over in April and May of 2003, but were refused payment of both their initial investment and the interest when the investment contract ended.

More than 300 civil lawsuits were opened in the courts during his absence. There is also a court investigation into his disappearance, according to which he may have fled Spain to escape the Russian mafia.
