The regional government of Andalucía issued a negative environmental report last week on a plan for a 19 km cable car up to the Sierra Nevada
The consortium which planned to build the longest cable car in the world from Granada City up to the Sierra Nevada ski resort in Pradollano, a distance of 19 kms, claims electoral interests are behind the Junta de Andalucía turning it down with a negative environmental impact report. The report from the Junta’s environmental department said the project would have a direct negative effect on the National Park’s fragile ecosystem and would endanger the habitat of many threatened species.

Juan Antonio López, President of Teleférico Siera Nevada SA, in an official statement released on Monday, blamed the closeness of the regional and general elections, both of which take place next Spring, and said, ‘perhaps in good time we will find out the truth behind the negative declaration' (on the project’s) 'environmental impact, and discover if any political party is hostage to interests which may be other than protecting nature.’

He added that the project is in his view viable, is clearly in the interests of society, and could have been adapted with compensatory measures to offset the effect on the environment. López alleges that more jobs for the province, development and more income have taken a second place to politics with the report from the regional government.
