The Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid had claimed that the judicial ordinance in Spain was taking a step backwards with respect to the Declaration of Human Rights
The Organisation Secretary of the PSOE Socialist Party, José Blanco, speaking on Onda Cero radio today has called on the Catholic Church in Spain to rectify a statement made during a rally in support of the family held in Madrid on Sunday.
During the event the Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid, Antonio María Rouco Varela, claimed that judicial ordinance in Spain was taking a step backwards with respect to the Declaration of Human Rights.
José Blanco said that was an extremely serious allegation, and said that those who wanted to be political are in their right to be so, but what they should do is stand as a candidate in the elections.
Blanco described the Madrid rally which saw churchgoers bussed from across the country and Portugal as ‘a Partido Popular event, presided over by some Cardinals’.
Rouca Varela contended that the Declaration of Human Rights recognised and established the family as the natural nucleus and fundamental to society, and it should be protected by society and the State.
Blanco said that was the same P.P. speech and coming two months before the elections wanted to take direct part in the campaigning. He lamented that the Church was carrying out a debate on politics in Spain based on ‘false realities and data’ and noted, for example, that the current law on abortion is the same as when the Partido Popular were in power. Blanco said that the situation in Spain was already favourable for families, and noted the new baby-cheque introduced by the Government along with new paternity permissions.
Criticism of Sunday’s event has also come from the leader of the left-wing IU, Gaspar Llamazares. He said that the event was organised by the most conservative wing of the Church.
The Spanish Federation of Gays and Lesbians accused the Church of dangerously promoting religious fanaticism.

In past centuries the church whipped-up anti-semitism, using hatred as a
tool to bind people to the church. Now gay people are being used in the
same, cynical way.

Spain has become one of the beacons of reason in the west. The Spanish
government and people should be commended for promoting the dignity of the
human person.
You have moved from the darkness of religious ignorance, and have promoted respect for all your citizen which is based on the common good. Some, and I emphasize some in the Catholic hierarchy yearn for the good old days of pay, pray and obey.
My prayer for the Spanish Church is that it will rid itself of those within its ranks who promote disharmony in Spain. These Cardinals are not expressing authentic Catholicism.
Catholics should express their Christian belief in specific practices or actions that confront and seek to change the shortcomings of both our religion and society while also affirming legitimate Spanish Values as expressed by its governing party.
The Spanish hierarchy need to start promoting Gospel values and not political agenda's. They are in no place to point fingers at others for their shortcomings.

Um Chris, Please read this book called "How The Catholic Church built
Western Civilzation" and this book by Rabbi Dalin "Myth of Hitler's Pope.
Um Chris, why is it that Liberals love to support Islamofacist and bash Israel and yet claim to accuse the Church of Anti-Semitism?
I guess that Liberals love to be "Tolerant" and love the diversity of opinion" but bash the Catholic Church and many others that disagree with the Liberal agenda.
I was at the Rally yesterday and it was not a Political RAlly but a celebration! In honor of the Holy Family!
This proves Liberalism is Godless and Thanks to Anne Coulter for this one!

Mark,
Happy New Year.
As a Roman Catholic I am ashamed that Pope Benedict XVI would address your public rally, and not address the issue of the Clergy Sexual Abuse scandal within the Church. Why is the Church shrinking in the West? It is because of this type of hypocrisy.
Why do you refuse to recognize the rights of all Spanish Citizens? Certainly as a Catholic you cannot address the centrality of the family as a common good without recognizing the issue of all citizens rights as also a common good.
The Pope lives in a world removed from the life of everyday Catholics. If he cannot address the issues that challenge him within his own church his words will be empty and meaningless. He appears to be far more interested in privilege, than the Gospel mission of the Church. He would have us return to the days of Trent and its court mentality, and totally forget about Vatican II and its reforms.
The last great pope in my lifetime was Pope John XXIII. His stand was with the people and not with the privileged mentality. He encouraged a diversity of opinion, and did not back away from lived experiences of his people.
Even though we disagree with each other, our call is to love one another.
Yes, we are all called to respect those whose faith are not the same as ours. The only option to secularism in society is religious wars. I pray our diversity will strengthen us and not devalue us.
As to what is going on in Spain it is not the place of any foreign power to dictate its agenda to the body politic of the Spanish people.

This is clearly a homosexual catholic showing his hatred for the church's
doctrines because they dont jive with his lifestyle and his wish to
incorporate his socialist ideals with the social functions that the church
used to perform. Who is surprised? I say, if the church doesnt accept
homosexuality like you'd like it to then quit. In the mean time, if you
dont like the message that was heard at the rally, then dont listen to it.
I find your post as hypocritical as every left wing post that shows up
here. "Ill show you how to be tolerant as soon as I can rant against these
darn religious nuts." Left wingers preach tolerance and then try to stiffle
any speech that doesnt agree with their "protected class" "entitlement"
ideals. So, Joe, do you frequently attend the homosexual rallys in San
Fransico where people dress as clergy in bondage and s and m outfits? Im
sure you find that to be harmless fun and we all just suffer from a
shortage of understanding. God help the world that you envision.

Also, I checked your website. It sounds like you should form your own

refreshing!

The Roman Catholic Church is an organ of the Vatican State. Its
interference in the internal politics of a foreign country, namely Spain, is
both intolerable and unacceptable. Such interference should lead to
strong diplomatic protests and even to the withdrawal of the Spanish
ambassador to the Vatican. At the very least, Vatican officials should be
ordered out of Spain.

What great words of wisdom. Kind of like, the public outcry calling the
Iraqi war illegal by countries outside of the United States in reference to
the US's autonomous, sovereign right to take down a dictator without your
(Spanish) approval. I guess you find it acceptable to use that double
standard. I cannot find a greater hypocracy on the face of this earth. You
should be ashamed of yourself.
I would love to see the church out of Spain so that you can drown in your immorality. You disgust me.

Poor Bob is to be pitied as he is seriously mentally ill. He should be
incarcerated in a lunatic asylum along with the old nazi who lives in the
Vatican. Religious faith is clearly recognized as a mental illness.

Any people in a free state can form a voluntary organization to express
their political views. It is called freedom of association and freedom of
expression. This is what the Church is in Spain. They have a right to
advocate and lobby, just like anyone else does. What is surprizing about
the Church and politics, is how infrequently it does exercise its power.
Remember, the Christian Church is the largest and most popular voluntary
human community on the planet. I think people tend to think that the Church
should not be political because it rarely is overtly so. Yet, consider that
Christians call Jesus Lord and Master, which means that they never give
ultimate authority to the state. This is what the socialist fear. They fear
free men who follow a leader whom they can not buy or kill.
