Ombudsman investigates Junta's actions in case of abused Málaga toddler
By m.p. - Jan 1, 2008 - 2:18 PM

The regional education authority allegedly failed to take action on concerns reported by the child's school

It’s been reported that the Spanish Ombudsman, Enrique Múgica, has started an investigation into the case of the three year old girl from Fuente de Piedra, in Málaga, who was admitted to hospital in Málaga City last month with injuries which doctors at the Materno Infantil said were consistent with continued abuse. The toddler’s stepfather was arrested and remanded without bail, and it’s understood her mother is also seen as a suspect. They had told doctors that she had fallen down the stairs while she was playing.

José Luis Calvo, spokesman for the children’s rights association Prodeni, told Europa Press said the Ombudsman’s office is investigating the possibility of ‘institutional neglect’ on the part of the Junta de Andalucía regional government for failing to take action on concerns reported to the education authorities by the child’s school. He said authorities at the San Ignacio school had informed the education inspectorate of bruising on the toddler’s body last October, Calvo made a written request for the Ombudsman to investigate 10 days ago.

The Prodeni spokesman plans to ask Múgica’s office to look into a similar case in Alhaurín de la Torre some days ago, where the mother of another toddler was arrested for alleged continued abuse of her daughter. Of particular concern, he said, was a previous incident when police found the child wandering alone along a local road after her mother left her shut in the car when she and her partner went out to dinner.
