The Moroccan Ambassador to Spain was called home for consultations by King Mohammed VI after the visit to Ceuta and Melilla by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia two months ago
The Spanish Foreign Minister, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, is to visit Rabat today, just two months after the conflict with Morocco after the Royal visit to the Spanish north African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Rabat said that debate was needed on the sovereignty of the enclaves in order to move forward.
Morocco withdrew their ambassador to Spain in protest at the Royal visit. Today the Spanish Foreign Minister will meet with his Moroccan counterpart, Taieb Fassi Fihri and whether the ambassador is given a date for his return is the main expected outcome of the meeting.
However the Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has said that he is not prepared to ‘open new subjects’ in the talks with Morocco.
Later in the day Moratinos will fly back to Madrid to welcome the return of the Spanish volunteer doctor, Mercedes García Valcarce, who has been released by kidnappers in Somalia.
