Newspaper ABC published the selected lyric on its front page today, ahead of time

The sight of Spanish athletes in international competitions humming the Spanish National Anthem, the Royal March on the podium, because there are no lyrics, has led the Spanish Olympic Committee, COE to launch a competition for lyrics for the piece.

Spanish newspaper ABC has today printed the winning lyrics for the anthem which have been chosen from thousands sent in to the Spanish Olympic Committee. A special jury was set up at the Complutense Musical Sciences Institute to make the selection. Emilio Casares, professor of musicology at ICCMU, also the Institute’s director, lead the committee, and was joined by Juan Pablo Fusi, professor of contemporary history, Manuel Jiménez de Parga, the former president of the Constitutional Court, the composer Tomás Marco, who is also an academic at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Aurora Egido, professor of Spanish literature at Zaragoza University, and, from the world of sport, the Olympic sailing champion, Theresa Zabell, who won gold for Spain in Barcelona in 1992, and again in Atlanta in 1996.

The lyrics chosen in Spanish are as follows:

¡Viva España!
Cantamos todos juntoss
con distincta voz
y un solo corazón.

¡Viva España!
Desde los verdes valles
Al inmenso mar
Un himno de hermandad

Ama a la Patria
pues sabe abrazar
bajo su cielo azul
pueblos en libertad

Gloria a los hijos
que a la Historia dan
justicia y grandeza
democracia y paz.

'Long live Spain, we sing it all together, with different voices and a single heart. Long live Spain, from the green valleys to the immense sea, a hymn of brotherhood. Love for the homeland which embraces, under the blue sky, peoples in freedom.
Glory to the sons who History will bless with justice and greatness, democracy and peace.'

A 52 year old unemployed man from Granátula de Calatrava, La Mancha, Paulino Cubero, wrote the lyrics which it’s hoped will be accepted by both the public and the Government. He told the press that he chose the words for the working class, 'those to take the metro to get to work'.

The winning lyric will be given to the Spanish Olympic Committee on Monday and Plácido Domingo will sing the words in public for the first time in a gala in Madrid on January 21st.

President of the COE, Alejandro Blanco has voiced his anger that the winning entry was leaked by the ABC newspaper and says they have no idea how it happened.

Speaking for the Government, Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, commented that the Government considers the selection process incorrect, and said the final choice will have to be made by the Sovereign body, that’s to say in Parliament. She said that it would be accepted only if the people decided.

Ex Minister for Culture, Carmen Calvo, was even more critical describing the lyric as ‘antique’ and ‘old-fashioned’.
For the lyric to be presented in parliament as part of popular legislation it needs a petition of support from at least 500,000 signatures.

Time will tell whether the Spanish people take the lyrics to their hearts or not. There has been no comment from the Palace.
