A row between the Cáceres Town Hall and the organisers of the event has led to the cancellation of the multi-cultural festival

Cáceres Town Hall has announced that the Womad World Music event will not be held in the Extremadura town this year. They blame the organisers of the festival for refusing to negotiate certain changes requested for this year’s edition. The organisers say simply that the festival will not go where it’s not wanted.

It marks an end to a 16 year run for the multi-cultural festival in the town. Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Leonor Flores, announced the cancellation of the event, saying that the organisers were trying to ‘impose’ their conditions. That contrasts to the Woman organisers who say that they were sent new conditions from the Gran Teatro Consortium in Cáceres without notice ten days ago, and that these clearly showed they wanted to take over the management of the festival in future.

Since the first Woman in Cáceres, held in 1992 conflicts between the two sides have been common, and the festival has been threatened before, but finally all the obstacles were overcome. This time no, and it marks the end of an era.
