Len and Helen Prior's retirment home was demolished as illegal earlier this month
A demonstration takes place outside the Town Hall in Vera this Sunday against the recent demolition of the house owned by a British couple, Len and Helen Prior, in the area of La Loma, in Vera. Their retirement home was brought down on a court order which ruled that it was built illegally on rustic land, despite the fact that it was built with planning permission from the local Town Hall. It’s understood the ruling was based on the Andalucía Land Law, which 20 minutos said came into effect in the same year permission was granted.
It’s thought to be the first case of a British-owned home in Spain to be demolished in such a way and, according to a real estate agent in Albox, who is a member of the Valle del Almanzora Association of Promoters and Constructors, it could affect many more in the area. He said in an interview with 20 minutos, that many properties in the district were built in line with local development plans which were no longer in force, but which were being used in the interim until the revised plan came into effect. What is important now, he said, is to ‘find a solution between all those affected – the administration, constructors and owners’ – so as not to lose credibility on the foreign property market.
He believes everyone has their share of the blame, but the problem now is to find a solution so that families are not ‘left out on the street.’

"...so as not to lose credibility on the foreign property market..." Too
late, mate. Anyone who buys a property in Spain now has to be from another
planet or just plain stupid. Oh, and what idiot bothered asking for the
opinion of a ...real estate agent in Albox, who is a member of the Valle
del Almanzora Association of Promoters and Constructors...? That's like
asking the fox for the best way to take care of the chickens.

I would just like to point out that the Mayor of Vera signed Mr. & Mrs.
Prior’s building license having received formal notice from the Junta
that it was illegal. I would like to know whether the Mayor of Vera
informed them of this extreme…
All this nonsense about protesting in Vera town square on Sunday “against the Junta” is just playing into the hands of the Mayor of Vera who is the only person responsible for the whole thing.
I wonder if Mr. & Mrs. Prior realize that their only legal path is to go to court against Vera Town Hall?
My suggestion would be that they find a very good Spanish lawyer (obviously not from Vera).
Has anyone thought: whoever sold them the land… whoever built their house (a local builder who strangely enough has just gone “bankrupt”) … their lawyer (I wonder, …) and the Town Hall … all knew that something was not right.
All I can say is that Spain is not all like this. They have just had extremely bad luck in meeting up with some very nasty pieces of work.
