New-born found on the doorstep of a Murcia convent

The baby's mother left a note asking the sisters to care for her daughter

The Murcia regional government has taken on the temporary custody of a new-born baby which was found abandoned outside a convent in Murcia City on Friday night. The mother left a note with the baby’s name, asking the nuns to look after her child, saying she had no money to care for her daughter herself.

The baby was three days old when she was found and is said to be in good health. She was admitted to the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia after the sisters of the Hermanas Religiosas María Inmaculada order contacted the 112 emergency service when they found the baby on their doorstep on Friday.

It’s understood the mother has now been identified and is, according to La Verdad newspaper, from Colombia. The juvenile protection service is meanwhile trying to locate a family member who may be able to care for the child.
