Town Hall promises to help owners faced by demolition in Mijas

A motion was approved at a council meeting to urgently explore ways of legalising the 300 homes which could be bulldozed
A council meeting in Mijas has unanimously approved a motion presented by the Mayor, Antonio Sánchez, to urgently explore all legal means possible to regularise the situation of properties in the municipality which are built on land classified as unsuitable for building. It affects some 300 owners, who have already received notification of either heavy fines or, in some cases, demolition. The Mayor said action must be taken quickly to try and ensure that the families do not lose their homes.

He described it as a complex problem, which must be addressed by each individual case.

Many of the properties in question are built on rural land which has been owned by the families for generations and, the Mayor said, much of them were built when planning regulations were distinct from those of today. He warned that there will be some properties which cannot be saved as they have been built on land which is classified as public or is governed by special protection.

The property owners concerned, who were at the council meeting, recently created a platform to defend their interests, with a representative for each of the eleven areas of Mijas affected.

As concerns of possible demolition and a real estate slowdown continue on the Costa del Sol, a Málaga province real estate agents association, the Leading Property Agents of Spain, has organised a convention which takes place in Marbella in April to discuss the future of the Costa del Sol and what the situation is forecast to be in the year 2020. Subjects under discussion include transport, town planning, infrastructure and tourism, and how the arrival of the AVE and the extension of Málaga Airport will affect tourism and development.

The LPA President, Ian Bateman, said the aim is to give a positive view to residents and property owners in the area and for them to take a part in a positive future for the Costa del Sol.
Business owners, property agents and residents are all invited to take part. The conference takes place in the Hotel Don Carlos in Marbella on 10th April.
