The two women were both 57 years old. One came from Barakaldo in the Basque Country, while the other was from Belgium
Two women, both 57 year old women, a Spaniard from Barakaldo in the Basque Country, and a Belgium, have died after being hit by a train on the new AVE high speed line. It happened in the Málaga municipality of Mollina, 3kms. from the Antequera - Santa Ana station at 9,30pm on Tuesday night according to the Guardia Civil and emergency services.

It’s now known that the two women had jumped over fencing to reach the train line, and the motive has been confirmed as suicide. La Opinion de Málaga reports that the couple was reported to have been standing on the track hugging each other.

They did not live locally, and chose the Santa Ana station specifically to end their lives. They walked for three kms in the dark before being hit by the train. A note was found at the scene which read ‘Please do not keep us alive. We are not organ donors’.

The Málaga to Madrid AVE line only came into operation on Christmas Eve last year.
