A march in their homage is covering part of the route the refugees walked as they crossed three provinces to try and reach safety
Homage was paid on the Costa Tropical this Sunday to the 120,000 malagueños who fled Málaga in February 1937 after the city fell to Nationalist forces, by retracing part of their long route to Almería province. Known as the ‘desbandá,’ or the ‘exodus,’ the refugees were subjected to constant bombardment from air and sea as they walked the coast road 71 years ago.

Many lost their lives on the ‘Caravana de la Muerte,’ ‘The March of Death.’

The 100 people who covered the route from Almuñecar to Motril on Sunday were accompanied by support vehicles, and by some of the survivors from la desbandá, Ideal newspaper reports.

The first tribute march was in February 2007, on the 70th anniversary of the exodus. There are two further stages in this year’s homage: in Málaga province, next Sunday from El Morche to Torre del Mar, and in Almería the following week, from Aguadulce to Almería City.
