The contractor is working on the viaduct over the Río Jate, halted when another viaduct on the same stretch of motorway collapsed, killing six men
After more than two years of being at a halt, work has finally restarted on one of the viaducts for the stretch of the A-7 motorway, the Autovía del Mediterráneo, which will connect La Herradura with Taramay, in Almuñécar.
Ideal newspaper reports that the viaduct in question is the 360 metre bridge over the Río Jate, which was halted after the tragic accident in November 2005 when another viaduct under construction - over the Río Verde - gave way, and six construction workers fell to their deaths. The company contracted for this stretch of the motorway also halted their work on the Río Seco viaduct after the accident.
The company is now working on completing the pillars which will support the Jate viaduct, which, once complete, will connect up with the Nerja to La Herradura stretch of the A-7 which opened just under a year ago. Work was due to restart last September, but was delayed by the devastating storms which hit the area, when construction materials which had been stored nearby were washed away, Ideal reports.
The Herradura to Taramay stretch of the A-7 was originally due to have opened in May 2005.
