The Basque Country is the worst offender, followed by Cataluña and Andalucía

A new report from Greenpeace has warned of pollution in Spain, and says that the Basque Country, Cataluña and Andalucía are the worst offenders. Their map of pollution black spots gives to 25 to the Basque Country, 19 to Cataluña, and 15 to Andalucía.

The environmental organisation’s report is based on existing information on pollution, amongst which is a figure from the Environment Ministry that air pollution in Spain causes 16,000 premature deaths a year. That’s 10 times higher than the annual fatality rate in traffic accidents, they say. Others figures quoted are that almost 4 million Spanish workers are exposed to cancerous substances, an estimated 4,000 die every year from exposure to chemical substances, and more than 36,000 are taken ill. Greenpeace said the figures come from a report on health at work by the Trade Union Institute for Employment, Environment and Health.

The report is part of a campaign which Greenpeace launched in Spain on Monday, where their ship, Arctic Sunrise, will be sailing the Spanish coast, highlighting the pollution black spots along the shores. Sara del Río, who is in charge of the campaign, said a pollution control agency needs to be set up to ensure that European legislation on waste disposal is met.
