New residential golf courses will only be authorised in cases seen as tourism interest

Manuel Chaves, President of the Junta de Andalucía, has been given a present – a mini golf set, which Los Verdes de Andalucía say will allow him to play golf at home or in the garden without turning Andalucía into one massive green.

It comes after approval by the Junta’s Cabinet this Tuesday of the new Golf Decree which, as expected, bans the use of drinking water for irrigation on golf courses in the region. Recycled water only can be used. The Decree becomes law next month with publication in the Official Bulletin, and existing courses will have two years to bring their facilities in line with the new regulations.

It also puts a stop to projects which link housing developments to golf courses, but with exceptions if the golf course is seen to be of tourist interest. Approval in that case must come first from a technical commission and then from the regional Cabinet itself, and Los Verdes believe it is a measure which, as EFE quotes, ‘leaves the catflap open’ to unsustainable property speculation.

Golf decree? Whatever they choose to call it, it has the stench of corruption. Just what Spain's reputation abroad needs right now.

Well, Andalucia is known to be short of them so a few more will not hurt and just think of all the protected areas that can be ruined and the species that are almost extinct can have that final nail driven into them for sure? Manuel Chaves has been good for the corrupt businessman in this cesspit of a country that was once proud but then again we know how rude and greedy its people are and we have all seen how most of them treat animals so when it comes to making a euro and saving an animal we know the choice they'll make!
