Saint’s Day for Abilio and Pascasio
1530: Carlos I of Spain is crowned by the Pope as Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.

1819: Spain agrees to cede Oregon and Florida to the United States under the Adams-Onís Treaty.

1938: Nationalist forces take the city of Teruel, ending the two-month battle which was to be a deciding factor in the Spanish Civil War.

1995: a majority vote in the Senate approves Statutes of Autonomy for Ceuta and Melilla, completing the new map of the ‘Estado de Autonomías’ in the Transition to Democracy.

2000: the Socialist spokesman in the Basque parliament, Fernando Buesa, and his bodyguard, Jorge Díez, are murdered by an ETA car bomb in Vitoria.

Noted births on this day in history include the director who is seen today as the father of surrealist cinema, Luis Buñuel, who was born in Calanda, Teruel, in 1900, and the world-famous flamenco dancer, Joaquín Cortés, who was born in Córdoba in 1969.
