Juan María Uriarte's statement is in conflict to the note released by the Bishops' Conference in Spain some weeks ago
The Bishop of San Sebastián, Juan María Uriarte, has called on the authorities of the Catholic Church to avoid any signs of party-political bias, particularly at election time.
The comments are made on the web page for his Bishopric and are in start contrast to the statement released by the Bishops’ conference organisation in Madrid two weeks ago, when voters were advised not to support a party which had negotiated with terrorists.
Uriarte called on the faithful to vote after making a decision ‘inspired by an ethical vision of life’. He said freedom consisted of voters making up their own minds, without protectionism or interventions from outside. ‘The voter has the right to be treated like an adult’, he said.
Meanwhile the 78 bishops in Spain will chose their new leaders between March 3 and 7. The two main contenders to head the Conferencia Episcopal are the current president, Bishop of Bilbao, Ricardo Blázquez, considered to be a moderate, and the more radical Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid, Antonio María Rouco, who previously led the bishops between 1999 and 2005.
