The Partido Popular would gain seats, but not enough for a win over PSOE
An opinion poll carried out for the Grupo Joly group of newspapers in Andalucía shows that the Socialist Party would obtain an absolute majority in the regional election on 9th March, and Manuel Chaves would be returned again as the President of the Junta de Andalucía, a position he has held since 1990.
The numbers give PSOE between 57 and 59 of the 109 seats in the regional parliament, between two and four fewer than their 61 seat share in 2004. The main opposition party, the Partido Popular, increase their share of the vote, up from 37 to 42 or 43. Izquierda Unida are set to hold on to their six seats, although there is bad news for the IU candidate, Diego Valderas. The poll shows the coalition would fail to get any MPs in the province he is hoping to represent, Huelva. He also failed to be elected in the last regional election in 2004.
Bad news also for Coalición Andaluza, which encompasses the Partido Andalucista, the Partido Socialista de Andalucía and other smaller parties. They would go down from the Partido Andalucista’s five seats in 2004 to either three or two, although the CA candidate, Julián Álvarez, is predicted to be one of those who will gain a seat in the Andalucía parliament.
