Two members of the Partido Popular are expelled from the party after photos of them killing cats appear on the Internet. It comes as a charity launches a webpage alleging cruelty in Spanish abattoirs.

The Partido Popular youth section, ‘Nuevas Generaciones’ has decided to expel two of the party’s candidates on the local election lists in Talavera de la Reina, in Toledo.

Jaime Ferrero and Carlos Vázquez were photographed grinning from ear to ear after having killed at least six cats, with the image appearing on a social site on the Internet. A member of the public decided to alert an animal protection association which has now placed a denuncia against the two men. Article 337 of the penal code means that those who ill-treat animals and show doing so unjustifiably can face upto three years in prison.

It comes as another charity, ‘Igualdad Animal’, has denounced what it describes as torture in some of the abattoirs in Spain.
They allege that animals earmarked for slaughter often face days without food and some cattle suffer greatly before death. On the webpage www.mataderos.info the charity also shows rabbits being given an electric shock ahead of having their throats cut. They show videos of alleged illegal practice against cattle, lambs, rabbits and pigs in abattoirs in the Valencia region.

The Spanish meat industry has denied that animals suffer pain when killed. A spokesman for the Meat Industry Association in Spain, claimed that for food chain reasons the meat industry was one of the most controlled.

These wicked evil people should be locked up for good. This kind of vicious cruelty does not help Spain or the Spanish people project an image of a decent country, far from it.

How can any decent person wish to cause pain and suffering to a poor defenceless animal. Shame on these people for eternity.

People who do this, rarely stop there. There is a proven link between animal cruelty and domestic, or other, violence.
These men are grinning however, because they know they are "buenos chicos", and nothing will be done agaist them.

Those of us who work in animal refuges must pick up the pieces. I walked a dog recently that had had her ears cut off. Probably by a bueno chico.

Real men protect the weak and innocent. Abuse to animals is not only linked to murder, but racism, paedophilia and rape.

Show these psychopaths the mercy that they showed the animals! ...(none)

After 30 years in the Army and the Police in the UK I am hardened against ANY cruelty to humans, it's just water off a ducks back BUT I cannot and DO NOT either understand or TOLERATE cruelty to ANY ANIMALS and should I see it or be able to locate the perpetrator as is often the case then I feel it is only my duty to hand out summary justice to that person as I have done on many occasions I am pleased to say since living in this country.I know NOT all Spanish people are cruel towards animals and mainly it is the country people who are at fault but to treat a dog for example as a "thing", kept on a short leash,on a parcela or finca with scattered dry food, little water,no companionship,to guard a property when it cannot properly do so until you tire of the animal and you then abandon it somewhere, anywhere.Or to see a child in adult company, kick a puppy or throw a kitten or cat in the air and not be scolded, you know this is the next generation of cruel adult to come.

I abhore cruelty of any kind so let's not forget Spain's national sport of bullfighting. This cruel and inhumane 'sport' is unjustifiable. I hope anyone found being cruel to animals, including bullfighters and the spectators get their just desserts.

The link on your page reads"Typicallyspanish", let me tell you, this behavior is not. Cruelty to animals cuts me to the bone, horrified as I am to see something like this happening in my country it is not a reflexion of our culture or sensibility. It has been punished according to law and caused huge commotion and genuine disgust and grief among Spanish people.I live with a cat whom I adore and have grown up surrounded by people who have always shown great love, respect, compassion and a strong sense of responsability towards them.

I feel that Monica Lerena is truly being disingenuous here. The spanish have a long history of cruelty to animals (see bull fighting)

Also, her comment 'I live with a cat whom I adore ...' does not really convince me that spanish people are less likely to be cruel to animals.

I dont know, im just not convinced Monica :)

I can not believe what I read the other day about a young bull who just did not want to fight, so they bring in a mini bulldozer to antaganise the young bull this did not work when they tried to push it around and eventually was killed in what they seem to think is a fair sport, and the commentators comments were what are we suppose to do, suppose to do if they did not have this money making business they would not have to suffer in the first place as long as 1966 I refused to go to watch a bullfight if all did this the sport would die out.

Re: Monica Lerena

I think that Richard has made his point quite clear in his comment.

It is quite obvious that he is unconvinced by your argument.

You should read his comment again and reply in an appropriate manner, not just reiterate an irrelevant personal vanity.

not vanity, but love, for animals and for my country.
Julie Keating
19 May 2008, 15:53
Its vanity. You are pontificating.

You are attempting to use this public forum to advance idiotic arguments which equate your personal behaviour with those of spanish people in general.

I was sure (until now) that this was a forum for intelligent and informed people.

Monica Lerena has surely proved me wrong.

Julie is quite correct

The stupidity of Monica Lerena is embarrassing and so typically un-Spanish.

Bull fighting is not cruel!

It is an important part of Spanish culture.

Bulls are particularly vicious creatures. For example, How many people do you know who have bulls as pets?

As they are vicious (and not any use as a pet)they therefore deserve to be treated badly.

I grow up in a country where cruelty with animals has been sold ,like a "part of our traditions & culture", to me. Not only bull fighting, many small village use animals in their own "fiestas populares" (i.e. push down a goat through a sharp cliff, tie ropes arround hen's necks and pull their legs until their head is completely separate of their bodies...)all this practice make many of us feel sick. But also people who abandone their pets(& that happens in all countries!!) are extremely cruel too & the worst of all: they are the same who say that "adore"them

That last post signed 'by me' is not mine, some one must be using me name, anyway have fun, tear yourselves apart if you so wish. I give up, there you have it: pride and vanity et all. But leave animals and my country out of it, go home if you dont like it here, there are no frontiers now and sit down to your steak diners... maybe write some more vicious insulting lines, after.

PS. Thanks JP, were ever you are

Re:Richard/Julie. How many spanish people do you know who are cruel with animals & why you talk about the behaviour of 'spanish people in general'?. If this news appears is becouse is something unusual & becouse there are many people who regreat this behaviour. I'm spanish, I don't have any pet becouse I don't want this 'big' commitment & that's not mean that I'm killing animals. I respect all animals,I hate bullfightings,&,it's true, Spain's a large traditions of cruelty with animals, but also many people & associations who're fighting against it, & that's not vanity!

Jaime Ferrero and company are not “normal” Spaniards, they are just “normal” assassins and show the traits of “normal” assassins, who enjoy the pain and suffering of others, as can be observed in the pictures.

It is true that cruelty has no frontiers and it exists the world over, however, having said that, various nations are crueler to animals than others. For example the Chinese torture and skin dogs and cats alive for the fur and meat industry; the Koreans and the people of the Phillipines also eat dogs. It is the manner in which they are killed which is most abhorrent. Finally, the Spanish are infamous for the torture of bulls and other unfortunate creatures which are used in religious fiestas. To torment and torture an animal in the name of religion is an abomination - Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, mentions in a hadith that anyone who is cruel to any animal will be punished. Such spectacles of animal cruelty is "haram" (forbidden) in Islam.

I am Iranian and I find this animal cruelty and death from a European nation highly embarrasing for Spain! I pray to God that it stops and that the Spanish come to their senses.

This comments is addressed to all of those who claim that the Spanish are a cruel nation and then come to the Spanish coast regularly with cheap flights to visit their relatives, who own a "Spanish Property" - please fuck off!!! You only bring pollution and shit to our beautiful coasts. What 20 years ago used to be a paradise is now overcrowded with monstruous urbanisations near the coastline build for silly English-speaking "owners", who after living many years in Spain aren't able to say a word in our language. Coming back to the shit problem: we have not got enough resources to supply your highly contaminating lifestyle. Go home and destroy your ugly rainy coasts!

It is true that bullfightings shouldn't be considered a sport, a really big percentage of the average Spanish population is against the bloodiness of this show. But after having read such stupid posts about the issue of cruelty to animals in Spain, incredibly UNINFORMED, I realised that we, Spaniards, neither have to apologize in front of you nor convince you of anything because fortunately we aren't the nation you're describing with insulting and unfounded comments and they are simply another proof of your lack cultural knowledge.

Congratulations: habéis ganado el premio a los foreros más imbéciles de la red!

I think there is nothing wrong with killing cats.
There are far to many of them in the world and they usually make too much noise late at night and eats rats and garbage and stuff.
In essenece cats are like verman, and i dont like verman.
So well done for killing six cats, hope you kill loads more.
Would it be worse if he was photographed holding 6 rats.
