Three people died in the outbreak traced to the ice rink refrigeration towers last year
The judge in charge of the criminal investigation into the
Legionnaires' outbreak at the
Benalmádena ice rink complex last year has started taking statements from those affected. EFE reports that two of those who were taken ill appeared in the court in
Torremolinos on Monday, and they will be followed by another 21 over the course of the coming weeks. Part of the investigation includes a medical examination to determine any side effects they may have suffered.
Others will be called to give evidence in April.
The news came on 1st July last year that the Mayor of Benalmádena,
Javier Carnero, had closed down the ice rink’s refrigerating towers as a precautionary measure after four local residents had been admitted to hospital with the disease. The number went up to nine, with two in ICU, the following day, and a week later the first patient had died, a 68 year old man from
Britain. Two others died the following month, by which time the outbreak had been traced to the refrigeration tower and other irregularities had been detected.
The judge in a separate disciplinary proceeding proposed a fine of 60,000 € last week for serious faults on the part of the management company which runs the complex.
