Dozens of sheep were killed and the line was closed for more than twelve hours
Normal rail service was resumed shortly after 7am on Sunday after an accident on the line between San Vicente del Raspeig and Alicante on Saturday afternoon, where a train from Valencia was derailed after ploughing into a herd of sheep. La Verdad newspaper said dozens of sheep were killed in the accident shortly before 6.30 pm on Saturday and many others escaped, but no-one on board the train was injured.
Renfe laid on an alternative bus service for the 180 passengers, which remained in place overnight as they worked to get the train’s front carriage back onto the tracks. The railway said seven trains carrying some 850 passengers were affected.
