José Martínez Andreo, under investigation in Operation Totem, said the party got 65% of the local vote in Sunday's election
José Martínez Andreo has issued a statement saying that he will continue on as Mayor of Totana after the news that the Partido Popular obtained 65% of the local vote in Sunday’s general election. The Mayor said it is more than three points above the party’s result in the 2004 national poll.
Martínez Andreo was expelled from the Partido Popular following his arrest in the Operation Totem corruption investigation in the town. He was granted 70,000 € bail on 1st February after two months on remand in the case and said after his release that he needed time to reflect and to take a decision on his future in the office of Mayor. He now says that his decision is supported by the majority of the local people, and speaks of the election as a ‘referendum’ in Totana, which has proved that the public believes in the PP’s political project in the town.
He goes on to say in the statement that he still has a great deal of ‘energy to carry on in politics, to fight for justice and truth and to work for the general interest of the people of Totana.’
