They believe a new strategy is needed with the stern section now lying on the seabed
Ecologists in Cádiz province have asked for explanations on the recovery operation for the New Flame, the stricken cargo ship which has been lying off Europa Point in Gibraltar after colliding with a tanker last August. The ship sank further below the waves in bad weather last month, with the stern section now lying on the seabed and just the New Flame’s funnel, the aft mast and its navigation bridge now visible above the surface.

Speaking to Europa Press, Antonio Muñoz, spokesman for Verdemar-Ecologistas en Acción, said he believes it will be close to impossible to carry out the plan of cutting the stern section away, which he says is ‘submerged and flooded on the seabed.’ He believes a new strategy is needed for the recovery operation, and also noted that the exact nature of the ship’s cargo of 42,000 tons of scrap metal has not been released.

Spain’s Foreign Ministry made a second request to the UK last week for explanations on the Gibraltar government’s handling of the recovery operation.

What´s the story w Gibraltar? Are they just ignoring the requests for an explanation. Do they feel they are above reproach?

I visited Gibralter only last weekend finding that the above attitude was mirrored throughout, with the exception of the staff at Marks & Spencers:

1) Our rep at the private studio we had reserved ´had better things to do with her time than wait till 5pm for us to arrive´. They also ´weren´t desperate to rent it out´. Bueno - good luck in the economic downturn.

2) In restaurants we were charged exhuberent rates of exchange for paying in Euros.

3) The hostel we had to make a rapid booking in, after being left high and dry by our booked accomodation made us feel like we were imposing on their family life. We werent allowed to use the kitchen facilities to cook food. It had to go in the bin.

Next time I rock up to the rock for British magazines, foodstuffs and co, I intend to be in and out. If we spend the night it will be on Spanish turf.

BTW: The New Flame isn´t as big as it seems from the TV....
