Higher numbers have been published in a report from the La Caixa savings bank

It has been estimated that there were 85 million irregular overnight stays by tourists on the Costa Blanca last year, where the visitors stayed in accommodation not controlled by the correct authorities. The number is 14 million higher than that seen in 2006 according to the report just published by the La Caixa bank. It shows that in Alicante province alone there are about 500,000 places which can be rented out in some 200,000 different homes.

The numbers show that efforts from the regional government to support the local hotel industry by cracking down on such rentals has not been successful and tourist businessmen are now demanding that the Consell take action.

Meanwhile foreign tourists on the Costa Blanca brought in 2.5 billion € last year. It works out at 870 € per person, up 1.5% on 2006, with an average daily spend of 94 €.
