The brotherhoods of the famous 'Madrugá' have been on the streets of the city in the early hours of this morning

There was a reprieve from the rain for the faithful in Sevilla overnight, with just three brotherhoods being unable to make their processions through the city streets because of the weather during the afternoon.

Clearer conditions allowed the other later processions to take place in the famous ‘Madrugá’ in the early hours of this morning. Perhaps the most famous brotherhood in the city, the Macarena, left their temple at 30 minutes after midnight, bringing hundreds of thousands of people out onto the city’s streets.

Other brotherhoods, El Silencio, el Gran Poder, la Esperanza de Triana, Los Gitanos and El Calvario made their departures even later in the early hours.

Those who did not want to stay up last night can see the processions of the Esperanza de Triana and the Macarena returning to their temples around noon today.

The weather was not so kind in Málaga where only two brotherhoods, Santa Cruz and the Sagrada Cena were able to dodge the rain, while other groups had to return rapidly to their temples.

Meanwhile in the Málaga village of Cómpeta, the locals will today lash and crucify their Mayor.
The tradition on Good Friday dates from when the Mayor was also the parish priest of the village, but now the same experience is in store for José Luis Torres from the PP. It’s because he has the honour of representing Jesus Christ in a performance of the Passion. Another oddity of the village is that the man and women hold separate processions, the men in the early hours of today, and the women this afternoon.
