The new legislation is expected to be passed into law after the summer
The Catalan regional government, La Generalitat, has today approved the first draft of a law in Spain on mass graves. The aim of the new legislation is to promote the signposting and dignify the location of the mass graves dating from the Spanish Civil War to that they are never forgotten, independent of any ideological options from the deceased which led them to become victims of repression.

Exhumations will only be able to take place at the sites if the families ask so, or if a request is made from a body which is not set to make any monetary gain. For the exhumation to proceed a request will have to be passed by a commission made up of professionals of prestige, representatives of municipal associations or from different departments of the Catalan government.

It’s been calculated that there are 179 mass graves in Cataluña, most of them as part of municipal cemeteries.
The new legislation is expected to be passed into law after the summer.
