A lengthy list of complaints are on the agenda for a meeting of the Petitions Committee
The agenda of a two-day meeting of the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee this week includes a lengthy list of items relating to land law in Spain and, in particular, in the Valencia Region, which EFE reports will be dealt with on the second day, this Wednesday.

The news agency lists some of the 40 or so complaints relating to Valencia, many of them presented by foreign residents, some placed against the previous and current land laws in the region, and others relating to specific planning projects. Projects in Alicante province are listed in Jávea, Benidorm, Torrevieja and Catral, amongst others, and also three natural parks: la Albufera, La Mata and Torrevieja.

There are 13 complaints on the table for possible planning abuse in Andalucía, including Estepona and Ronda in Málaga province, Níjar in Almería, and Algeciras in Cádiz. Others relate to work on the M-501 and M-30 roads in Madrid.

A meeting of the European Parliament last June adopted a resolution condemning Spain for disastrous unsustainable massive development in some parts of the country, calling on governments, particularly that of Valencia, to recognise the individual’s legitimate right to legally acquired property. The resolution came on the results of the Petitions Committee’s fact-finding mission to Valencia, Andalucía and Madrid earlier in 2007.
