It follows her refusal to deny that she may stand for the post of party leader at the PP party conference in Valencia in June
More war of words in the
Partido Popular, and more friction between the PP controlled Madrid regional government, led by
Esperanza Aguirre and the Madrid city hall, and Mayor
Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón.
Following the refusal earlier in the week of Esperanza Aguirre to say she would not be standing against Mariano Rajoy for the leadership of the party and the PP party conference in Valencia in June, now the Deputy Mayor of Madrid, Manuel Cobo, has commented that she will not fight for the post as she simply does not have the support. He went on to criticise what he described as the ‘spectacle’ from her, which he said was damaging.
‘I don’t think the party managers are happy with Esperanza Aguirre’, he said.
Cobo however also told an audience at a conference in a Madrid hotel, that he though that any party activist could stand as a candidate for leader at the Valencia conference.
Founding President of the Partido Popular, Manuel Fraga, said whoever could stand, but it was a different matter to be selected.
Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, has now added his comments to the soup, by saying that the ‘indecisive’ Aguirre has the right to stand, but not the support. He added it would have been more elegant and collaborative if she had chosen another date for her demands, a reference to the fact she did so just days before the investiture debate in Congress, effectively diverting attention away from Zapatero and onto Rajoy.
