Testing is already underway on the high-speed rail line to increase top speeds to upto 350 km/hour.

The AVE high speed train service between Madrid and Barcelona is to increase top speeds to between 300 and 350 km/hour in the autumn. It will take journey time between the two largest cities in Spain down to just two hours, compared to the two and a half hours currently.

Business newspaper Cinco Dias reports that the railway infrastructure company Adif, and Renfe Spanish railways have already started carrying out testing on the line.

Last month, the new AVE service took 101,207 passengers away from the ‘puente aereo’ air link. Adif considers that if the journey time is reduced to two hours, then the AVE train will take up to 75% of the market away from the airports.
