Ferrán Adrià has recovered top place in the Restauarant Magazine list from Heston Blumenthal
The ‘El Bulli’ restaurant, run by the famous Spanish chef, Ferrán Adrià, is back on top of the list of the world’s best restaurants in Restaurant magazine. The latest edition of the magazine has the British ‘The Fat Duck’ and Heston Blumenthal remaining in second, with Adrià on top for the third consecutive year.

El Bulli is found in Roses, Girona, and its owner Adrià is gaining a world-wide reputation as the alchemist of the kitchen for his love of experimentation.

Third on the list was Pierre Gagnaire in Paris, and Spain was back in fourth place with the Basque restaurant Mugaritz.

Spain has seven establishments in the top fifty list, placing it third countrywise behind France with ten and the United States with eight. The list is compiled by votes from a panel of international judges made up of some 700 restaurant owners, chefs and critics.

Heston Blumenthal has only once been placed at the top of this list, in 2005. In fact, this position caused such an outcry that Restaurant Magazine's voting system was, supposedly, overhauled.

Whether or not el Bulli is indeed the world's best restaurant, the list itself has been heavily criticized as an unscientific, unfair and biased publicity exercise for an essentially unimportant trade magazine.

The fact that it does garner such international attention is more a testament to the mentality of editors ever watchful for lists, rankings and whacky research findings to make up for a paucity of news analysis.

Just like the Oscars and the Goyas: the Orphanage has got to be the most boring spanish film in a long line of boring, long-hauled spanish films
