Sources close to Carme Chacón say that such restrictions on internet use are normal.
The new Spanish Defence Minister, Carme Chacón, continues to make waves, this time by ordering the restriction of Internet use in military establishments.
A circular sent out recently has stopped access to certain sports and leisure webpages popular with Spaniards, including Marca, AS and the gossip and soft porn magazine Interviu. Internet auction sites are also included, and access will not be allowed from any military building.
Defence Ministry sources say that such measures are normal and are applied in other private and public companies, but the Unified Association of Spanish Military, have described the move as censorship. They say that access to the Internet should be free, and that the minister is treating them like children.
Meanwhile the heavily pregnant minister will today preside, for the first time, over a meeting of the Military Superior Council, a body made up of the lieutenant generals who are currently active and in command. The meeting will be held in the Buenavista Palace, home to the army headquarters and will be hosted by the Army Chief, General Carlos Villar.
