Alonso was less than a tenth of a second slower than Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari.
Despite the somewhat pessimistic forecasts of Fernando Alonso, the driver from Asturias will start second on the grid in tomorrow’s Spanish Grand Prix. Thousands had attended the final practice session at the Montmeló track and thought that Alonso had made pole before Kimi Raikkonen put in his fastest time on a track where the pole position has led to victory in the race every year since 2001.

The R28 Renault was less than a tenth of a second behind the Finn’s Ferrari. The McLarens were relegated to the fourth line of the grid. Alonso said that he did not expect such a good result in all this season, but doing do in Spain was something particularly special. He thanked all the fans for always being there, independent of his results, and said it was one of the happiest moments of his career.
