Michael John Walker is a long time resident of the area and works with Murcia University.
A 67 year old British man Michael John Walker, who has lived in the Murcia area since 1987 spends his time looking for Neanderthal man. Every summer he heads to the Sima de las Palomas del Cabezo Gordo, near Torre Pacheco, to look for bones and other remains.

Michael arrived in Murcia in 1987 to give a conference at Murcia University, but ended up being employed in the Anthropology Department.
He is now a widower, having married local woman María Teresa Pina Velasco and has three children. He tells 20 minutos.es that the most exciting remains of Neanderthal man he has found so far were two skeletons in 2005, which were the first such remains to be found in Europe since 1976. They were 55,000 years old according to the latest Uranium dating methods.

He tells the paper that Oxford and Bristol universities in the U.K. are particularly interested in the research he has been carrying out in Murcia and that he is enthusiastic about the new Regional Museum on the Evolution of Man which is now in the planning stages.
