The ex primary school teacher became President of the Canary Islands in 2007
Paulino Rivero Baute, the Coalición Canaria President of the Canary Islands since 2007, is a primary school teacher who was born in El Sauzal, on the north of Tenerife, in 1955. He is married with two children.
He became Mayor of his home town in 1979, in the first local elections to take place after the end of the Franco regime, and was returned to the post with an absolute majority in all the successive municipal polls which were held over the coming years until 1997. During his time as Mayor, he was also Vice President of the Cabildo – the government of the island – where he held responsibility for three separate departments between 1987 and 1999.
Rivero moved into national politics in 1996, when he was elected as a member of parliament for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and was spokesman for his parliamentary grouping in the lower chamber of the Spanish parliament. He was an extremely active member of Congress during his time in parliament, particularly during the VII legislature, when he was a member, and in some instances spokesman, on a number of parliamentary committees. The future Canaries President held presidency of the investigatory commission into the tragic bombings on Madrid commuter lines on 11th March 2004, where 191 people lost their lives and more than 1,800 were injured.
In February 2007, Paulino Rivero was named by his party as their candidate for presidency of the islands in the regional elections due to take place in May that year. The poll saw the Socialist Party gaining a simple majority of 26 regional MPs, but failing in their efforts to reach a governing pact with Rivero’s party, Coalición Canaria, the regionalist party which had held presidency of the Canary Islands since 1995, and which came out the second most voted party in the 2007 election.
Paulino Rivero was invested as President of the regional government on 11th July 2007 with the support of the 19 CC deputies and 15 from the Partido Popular, making him Coalición Canaria’s fourth consecutive President of the Canaries government.
