The Partido Popular had placed a challenge in the Constitutional Court against Cataluña being described as a nation.
The draft of a ruling from the Constitutional Court in Spain moves to accept that Cataluña be defined as a ‘nation’.
The draft, written in the name of the President of the Constitutional Court, Judge Maria Emilia Casas, admits the use of the term in the preamble of the region’s statutes given that in that position it has no judicial effect.

The use of the word ‘nation’ in the document had been challenged by the Partido Popular in an appeal placed nearly 18 months ago.
The Constitutional Court has however rejected the relationship between Cataluña and Spain being described as ‘bilateral’.

According to the Barcelona paper ‘La Vanguardia’ this morning, the draft ruling from the court is still to be subjected to a vote in the court, the conservative majority of five judges in the chamber are reported to already have decided on their opposition, with the President and another four magistrates accepting the draft. That leaves the Vice-president of the court, Judge Guillermo Jiménez, holding the decision in his hands.
