The Spaniard has been complaining about the cramped calender of matches.
In Rome, Rafa Nadal has lost on clay for only the second time in 105 matches, against fellow Spaniard, Juan Carlos Ferrero. The loss in the second round, 7-5, 6-1, comes after wins for Nadal in both the championships at Montecarlo and Barcelona.
Nadal was playing with blisters and repeated his comments against the high number of games in the calendar after the match.
Verdasco meanwhile beat Lapentii in three sets, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 and will now meet Blake, and Robredo beat Mahut 7-5,7-6 and now faces Davydenko.
