The funeral for the Guardia Civil murdered by ETA and the ongoing crisis in the Partido Popular dominate the Spanish front pages today.
El País has a photo of a ceremony in honour to Juan Manuel Piñuel carried out in the Basque Parliament. The paper notes it was the very first time that a photograph of a recently ETA assassinated Civil Guard had been placed in the Basque parliament.
El Mundo has a photo of the Prince and Princess of Asturias at the funeral service in Vitoria, looking over the coffin, with other ministers in the background. The paper headlines that the police are now looking for a new ‘car bomb factory’ in France. The paper reports that the police think that ETA has a new explosives expert in their ranks after the arrest of the previous one, Luis Iruretagoyena, last September.
ABC has the same photo as El Mundo.
ABC headlines that the PNV run towns in the Basque region have stopped improvements being made to the security of Civil Guard barracks in the region. The paper reports that several has not allowed concrete bollards to be placed to stop vehicles approaching and one denied a request for a closed circuit camera on a lamppost and then played a night bus bus-stop at the door.
El País leads with the headline that the Mariano Rajoy has closed ranks with Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón. The paper says that Rajoy publically searched for the support of the man earlier considered to be his enemy number one, to help fend off the attack against him from the hardliners in the party.
El País said the two men spent three hours together yesterday, and notes that most of the PP deputies in the Basque Country have criticised the posture of their leader in the region, María San Gil.
El Mundo says the meeting between Rajoy and Gallardón only lasted for 45 minutes.
El País has a feature on the real estate industry in Spain – direction crisis says the headline, and says that flat sales are down by as much as 72%.
The failure of the Princess of Asturias sister, Telma Ortiz, to win a court battle over her privacy means that she is on the front pages this morning. El País says she has lost the battle to impose pre-empting censorship, and notes that the judge in Toledo has also ordered her to pay the costs of the case.
El Mundo covers the verdict and says the costs could be over 40,000 €.
Público leads with the story and has the headline, Telma Ortiz in the objective.
El País reports that Prime Minister Zapatero is searching for an internal pact in the Socialist party on how the regions of Spain are funded. The paper says the P.M. wants to avoid splits in the party over regional funding and has organised a discreet meeting for Wednesday next week on the matter where the Minister for Tax and Economy, Pedro Solbes, will be present.
El Mundo notes that the region of Aragón has called for the water transfer from Tarragona to Barcelona be stopped – or put on hold, because it has rained a lot.
ABC notes that Catalan party Convergencia is to vote on a plan for sovereignty of the Cataluña region. The paper says a route map will be presented in July.
In international stories, more coverage in El País on the life of immigrants in Italy. The paper says the Italian police yesterday carried out raids against hidden immigration in nine regions of the country, which ended with 400 arrests, of whom 268 were immigrants and at least 53 were expelled from the country without further procedures.
El País reports that an 11 year old girl has been rescued in China after being trapped in the rubble following the earthquake for 63 hours. The paper says she was only the second person to be found alive at a school where hundreds of children died.
El Mundo says that in the courts in Valencia a man has seen his sentence for sleeping with an under aged girl reduced because he came ‘from the Amazon forest’.
Back in Spain, El País looks at the scandal in the Generalitat Catalan Government where payments have been made for reports which in fact do not exist. The paper says that 42,000 € was paid for two documents which were never presented.
