The Spanish Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, considered that the Silvio Burlusconi administration was not respecting the human rights of foreigners.
The Spanish Socialist Government has launched an attack on the policies of the recently re-elected Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi, considering the newly introduced measures in Italy do not respect the human rights of foreigners. It comes as more than 400 immigrants, many of them gypsies, have been arrested in Italy over recent days.

Speaking to the press after the regular Friday cabinet meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, said
‘The Spanish Government rejects violence, racism and xenophobia, and therefore cannot condone what it happening in Italy’.

Her comments have had a great effect in Italy with the story leading all digital editions of the main newspapers there on Friday night.

De la Vega added that the Government was working to stop illegal immigration but had always respected the rights of those without papers. Spain was working for a legal and ordered immigration which allowed rights and obligations to be recognised’, she said.

The comments drew a quick reaction from the Italian Government, but a possible larger argument was sidestepped by a call from the Spanish Secretary of State for the EU, Diego López Garrido, who phoned the Italian Ambassador to Spain to explain that the Deputy Prime Minister was referring to the racist and xenophobic attacks which were being produced against the Romanians in gypsy camps in Naples.

Speaking at the Latin American, Carribean and EU Summit in Lima, the Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, described the contacts between Italy and Spain as ‘not even an incident’.

Then you take the gypsies. You should live well together considering you are of the same blood line.

Given that Spain is one of the most xenophobic countries I've ever lived in I find her comment a bit hypercritical and she was out of line to comment. She should be doing more to combat racism in Spain rather than commenting on other countries policies. If anyone thinks that that the Spanish are not fundamentally racist all they need to do is go to a football match or a F1 event and watch/listen to the comments whenever it's not a white person.

Why are there two Roberto user names on this site?
THIS Roberto does NOT agree with the comments made above. The deputy PM has every right to criticise the right wing, racist attacks in Italy.
Stupid comments like, "...you are of the same blood line. " just show the ignorance of the poster!
Also to generalise that all Spanish people are racist because of incidents at sports events is like saying all Scotsmen are hooligans, because of the violent of a few in Manchester.

No bob he's not criticising me, he's criticising the Spanish. Try substituting the word "Jews" for the word Gypsies in the article and the first posting, and then tell everybody that it is still ok.

Commnist, Maoist.... call me what you want but don't defend racism. We are all human beings!

How very sensitive from a country that decimated the whole South American continent and then stole their wealth.
Roberto, why dont you censor him? Isnt that what you really want? It appears that you feel that he shouldnt be allowed to speak his mind because it doesnt agree with yours. Why dont you just teach him to love everyone equally? (Except the right wing of course.) Your so enlightened.

bob, I'm not sure that you know me, so your personal comments are way off the mark.

However, are you saying we are not all human beings? Do you think some people should not be treated equally under the law? Do you think racism is acceptable?

I'm curious, but I'll not loose any sleep waiting for an answer from you.
