Over 5,000 immigrants have lost their jobs in the first quarter of the year in the province.
The economic slowdown in Alicante province has resulted in 5,520 non-EU immigrants losing their jobs and residence permits over the first quarter of the year.
Most of the jobs have been lost in the construction industry which has laid off over 9,000 in total compared to last year, but which still employs over 33,000 people in the province.
Across the board some 10% fewer new contracts were signed between January and March in the province this year compared to last, at 19,744.
Union UGT is demanding greater stimulus to economic activity and says such measures need to be complimented by medium and lon term policies based on social dialogue.
