Alberto Ruiz Gallardón is to be part of the Partido Popular opposition front bench team.
Mariano Rajoy, the leader of the Partido Popular, has told the Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón that he will be part of his new opposition team, but as yet nobody knows the exact post.
Rajoy has identified Gallardón as a loyal supporter in his attempts to move the Partido Popular to the centre, in the face of what appears to be increased opposition against him from party hardliners, the previous leader of the party, José María Aznar, and sections of the media such as the El Mundo newspaper.
Gallardón has told the press that his is very thankful and is at the disposition of Rajoy for whatever responsibility. The post is likely to be one which can be covered while he also remains as Mayor of Madrid.
Gallardón heard the news while attending an event with his arch enemy in the party, the regional PP leader of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre. Speaking at the event Rajoy said he wanted a party that was not divided ‘between good and bad’.
For her part Esperanza Aguirre put a brave face on things, and said it would have been news if Rajoy did not count on Gallardón.
There is some speculation in the Spanish Press that Gallardón is now set to be the new Secretary General of the party.
