Arrested ETA activists appear in court in Paris

Among those arrested in Bordeaux last Tuesday was the man considered to be the ETA Number One, Javier López Peña, known as Thierry.

The alleged head of ETA, Javier López Peña, known as Thierry, and the three other ETA activists arrested in France with him in Bordeaux last Tuesday, have been charged by Anti-Terrorism judges in Paris. Among the judges was the top French expert judge on ETA, Laurence Le Vert.

The other three alleged terrorists, Ainhoa Ozaeta Mendikute, Igor Suberbiola and Jon Salaberria, are said to be members of ETA’s political wing. The fifth man arrested was the 75 year old Frenchman Louis Fort, who rented the terrorists the accommodation which they had been using since August 2007. They face thirty years in prison in France.

In the small flat police found five pistols, some components for explosives, laptop computers, cash, false documents and number plates. Police continue to inspect the contents of the computers.

The terrorist known as Thierry is now almost 50 and has been wanted since 1983. Spanish Interior Minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba has described him as the person with ‘most political and military weight’ in ETA. It’s now known that Thierry had ordered the offensive against the construction of the AVE high speed train line in the Basque region.
