The fish will be handed out free to the public outside Ministry offices in Madrid as part of a demonstration to draw attention to the problems in the industry.
Spanish fishermen are to hand out as much as 20 tons of fish for free in Madrid today in protest at the high diesel prices which they say had made their job unprofitable.
A series of protest actions organised by the fishermen’s employers’ organisation CEPESCA start today outside the offices of the Ministry for the Environment and Rural and Maritime Affairs. They say the fish they hand out will have been caught yesterday to show the quality of the Spanish fleet and to draw attention to the crisis in the industry.
There will be an international component to the demonstration in Madrid today with representatives from fishermen in France, Italy and Portugal, and comes ahead of plans for an indefinite strike in Spain which will see empty fish markets from June 16 onwards.

Must be doing well if they can afford to give away free fish. I could never
understand the logic to this kind of protest: i would double the prices and
hold the country to ransom!

If something becomes too costly to make (i.e., what you get when you sell a
product doesn't cover your costs), the person will find a way to lower the
costs, make the product more attractive for the buyer who will be prepared
to pay more for it, or stop producing this product altogether.
The governments should do nothing. Why?
1) costs to anyone that uses fuel as input at his or her work have risen ... how long will we have to wait for them to start protesting too?
2) fuel costs are not the only input costs that have risen ... why is not everyone protesting, since all inputs have risen in the past?
Therefore, the only thing that European governments can justifiably do is to reduce sales taxes on fuel (French President Sarkozy is unfortunately a lonely rider in this battle). If Europeans want cheaper fuel they should demand that their governments refrain from the "EU's goals of improving energy efficiency and reducing consumption," rather than tax them for a 'noble goal' in the first place and later relieve them from the higher fuel prices that government helped to soar.
