New research from Navarra University has confirmed the benefits of a diet rich in fruit and vegeatables.
There is new evidence of the benefit of the Mediterranean diet from new research carried out in Spain.
A diet rich in vegetables, fruit and olive oil reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, according to the researchers at the Navarra University which has published its conclusions in the British Medical Journal.
The researchers followed the health of 13,380 graduate students for more than four years to reach their conclusions which also confirmed that heart disease was also controlled by the diet. The research also looked at family history, the amount of exercise taken, whether the person was a smoker and if they had diagnosed diabetics as members of their family.
The researchers from Navarra said that more studies were needed to ratify their conclusions, but it seemed clear that the Mediterranean diet could reduce the risk of developing diabetes by as much as 83%, and that what we eat plays a substantial part in the prevention of disease.
There was also worrying evidence from the new research which showed that younger people in Spain are abandoning the Mediterranean Diet in ever-increasing numbers.
