The origin of the slick is still to be established by the authorities, and Valencia Port has been placed on alert.

A 3.7 kilometre long and 50 metre wide slick is reported to be advancing towards the La Malvarrosa beach in Valencia.

Boats worked two kilometres offshore through the day yesterday to try and break up the oil, while samples were taken to try and establish the origin of the slick.

A fisherman from Galicia, who worked on the clean up following the Prestige oil spill there, has claimed the slick looks like tar to him, while the Valencia Port Authority declared a red alert and activated its emergency plans.

Work is continuing to clear the slick this morning and 3,200 kilos of oil has been removed aleady, with the site declared now to be ‘practically controlled’.
